thriller codes and conventions

conventions  (a report on the conventions of the genre (form and content))

the conventions of a thriller will apply to both movies and TV shows that focus on the thriller genre then use it as a sub genre. So to start they will use low/dim lighting this is used to create a darker atmosphere this will enable suspense to be built as the imagination can explore the dangers of what could be lurking in the darkness. Another thing you see is mirrors as some people believe you can see your inner self. something i noticed in thriller is the framed photos on the home walls of the antagonist this images are used to make your subconsciousness feel uncomfortable, this adds to the suspense and the excitement of the film.

When it comes down to thriller film editing you want visually some quick cuts, this is to create a sense of tension and suspense when a thriller begins you would go from establishing shots to some close up and possible a few mid shots, this allows the viewer to build a familiarity with the main character but when the plot thickens you move out to long shots to give the viewer a better view on whats going on.

To create some overall effects you can turn the video into black and white which adds a very sinister look and vibe to the film. the other thing is to have a constant Pleonastic style of music, this will add to the suspence but a commen thriller affect is to stop all non Diegetic sound when the action is going on. somtimes thrillers music stops to trick the viewer to exspect somthing when nothing happens and next time the viewers guard is lowered so they dont see it coming next time you stop the music and do a action scene.

(a definition of the target audience for thrillers)

all films audiences are broken down into age groups and sex, so simply you can make it relate more to males or females this will mean, either more romance or action. the age groups are broken up into the following category's, kids 5-10, tweens 10-14, teens 15-18 or 21, young adults 18-24 or 18-34, adults 25-54 then you get films for the elderly 54+

A target audience can be broken down even more for a Pacific target audience such as, economics, education, religion, nationality, ethnicity, geography and psycho graphic. i don't know the point of these, as getting a certain target audience lowers the number of buyers but i do see that by adding these can lesson the possibility of offending some one.

(a report on the narrative structures (turning points, twists) in a thriller of your choice)

a writer who has hit a wall, who knows a man who can help his situation. FDA approved.
this man has access to a drug that allows you to access all your brain, frankly it makes you smarter.
he states that this drug has been tested and is FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved (legalised)
curiosity makes the main character take the drug.
"i was blind but now i see" a famous quote from the new testament.
this drug enabled him to learn new stuff, really fast, he finished his book in 4 days.
investment became easy to him, the continuously change rates and he was able to stay ahead.
the drug unlocks your full potential
the twist is that the antagonist find out about the drug and uses more of the drug as leverage to controll the protagonist. the added twist is that the protagonist is able to find a way to keep the intelligence and not to die once you stop taking the pills. as that was the big side affect. in other words he has made the drug more efficient.

(a report on the characterization used in a thriller of your choice)

Eddie Morra is played by Bradley Copper he is the protagonist, his character is down in the dumps average person. He just gets lucky, or does he, with this drug it makes him paranoid, delusional and Hypochondriac. He gets in over his head and has to fight a battle against the antagonist who just wants to control him for his own benefit.

Carl Van Loon is played by Robert De Niro, the character is classed as the antagonist, he wants fortune and power and he belives Eddie Morra is his key to increasing his buisnesses efficency, becouse Eddie is he best at the investment market all becouse of this drug.

...Thrillers provide such a rich literary feast. There are all kinds. The legal thriller, spy thriller, action-adventure thriller, medical thriller, police thriller, romantic thriller, historical thriller, political thriller, religious thriller, high-tech thriller, military thriller. The list goes on and on, with new variations constantly being invented. In fact, this openness to expansion is one of the genre's most enduring characteristics. But what gives the variety of thrillers a common ground is the intensity of emotions they create, particularly those of apprehension and exhilaration, of excitement and breathlessness, all designed to generate that all-important thrill. By definition, if a thriller doesn't thrill, it's not doing its job.

TASK 2: Research, 2012 olimpycs part 6

4,200 athletes from 160 countries are expected to attend with 471 medal events on the programme.

There are currently 196 independent countries or States around the world. Territories of countries or individual parts of a country are not countries in their own right.

'In the last three Paralympic Games (Beijing 2008, Athens 2004 and Sydney 2000) Paralympics GB has never finished lower than second in the medal table. Beijing 2008 was the most successful Paralympic Games ever for Paralympics GB with a final tally of 42 gold medals.
More than half, 55 per cent, of the British Paralympic team in Beijing in 2008 were at their first Games, making London 2012 a fantastic prospect for more medals.'

'Britain on high alert during Olympics with terror threat classified as 'severe'

Britain's security services will be on high alert during the Olympics with the terror threat to be classified at 'severe' despite the level being downgraded by the Government this week.
Home Secretary Theresa May announced that the assessment of a terrorist attack had been lowered to 'substantial' which means that the risk of an attack is considered a strong possibility and could occur without further warning.

Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson said Tuesday that the planning assumption for the Games remains that the threat will be at severe - the second highest classification, meaning an attack is highly likely.
Earlier this month Police began testing Olympic venues against all potential terrorist threats, including from Irish dissidents and Islamists.

Next summer's Games are predicted to be Britain's biggest peacetime security operation, with the government setting aside a budget of £600million for the security operation.
Fans will face airport-style security before being allowed into venues, with queuing taking between 15 and 20 minutes during peak times.
The showpiece event will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Munich Olympics, when 11 Israeli team members died after being held hostage by Palestinian gunmen.'

When the world wars were taking place the Olympics where postponed due to the war meaning traval beetween Countries would be to dangerouse as athletes did not wish to become casualty's of war nore prisoners of war. this affected Summer Olympic Games were not held in 1916, 1940, and 1944. Winter Olympic Games were not held in 1940 and 1944.
in 1992 the games where held at Albertville, France and a short time of two years later in Lillehammer, Norway the Winter games where held again this was to put the sumer and winter games to alternate every two years. this was also a good tourism move as people can now attend both rather then one or the other.
